The VCAT II course is intended for people who have mastered the basics of vibration analysis and need to be able to take good data, analyze a range of fault conditions, and the requirements of precision balancing and alignment.
You will learn how to test machines correctly, how to diagnose faults accurately, perform additional diagnostic tests for verification, how to set vibration alarm limits, and how to correct certain types of faults. You will understand why the vibration signatures change the way they do and how to use time waveform analysis and phase analysis to verify the fault condition.
You will take away skills that you can immediately apply to your job, transitioning from being a person who is primarily capable of collecting data to a person who can diagnose faults on critical machinery, and in some cases, prevent or correct them.
In this course you will:
- Increase your knowledge on maintenance practices, condition monitoring, and the common condition monitoring technologies
- Increase your knowledge about data collection, testing techniques, sensor types, etc.
- Learn a great deal about signal processing and the settings of your vibration analyzer
- Increase your knowledge of spectrum analysis, time waveform analysis, and phase analysis
- Understand why phase analysis and time waveform analysis are both critical tools used by the vibration analyst
- Learn about common failure modes and how to detect them, including unbalance, misalignment, looseness, resonance, pump/fan/compressor vane, and flow issues, cavitation, turbulence, gearbox failures, rolling element bearing failure, and more
- Learn about high-frequency bearing and gear fault detection techniques: demodulation, enveloping, SPM, HD, shock pulse, PeakVue and Spike Energy.
- Be able to use spectra, phase readings, time waveforms, bump and impact tests, to test for looseness, resonance, and other conditions
- Learn about precision shaft alignment and soft foot correction
- Learn about single and two-plane balancing
- Learn the basics of setting alarm limits: band alarms and mask/envelope alarms.

Distance Learning (on-line) Course Format:
The course consists of videos of short studio recordings, totalling 38 hours, presented by Jason Tranter, the renowned Mobius founder.
It is equivalent to sitting a 4.5-day classroom course.
The course is very comprehensive and informative, with audio commentary and animated visual slides.
A bound, colour-printed course manual is provided for students to study offline.
Students have 4 months to complete the course.
If more time is required, the time allocation can be extended for one year.
Prerequisites
Anyone can do the course and exam.
However to gain ISO 18436-3 VCAT II Certification, the prerequisites are:
- A minimum of 18 month’s of work experience, verified by an independent person.
- Completing all the modules of the course
- Passing the 3-hour, 100 question multiple choice exam with a minimum of 70% correct answers.
Certification:
Certification is provided by Mobius Institute Board of Certification. MIBoc is an accredited certification body per ISO/IEC 17024 and ISO 18436-1 authorized to provide certification in accordance with ISO 18436-1 and 18436-2. There is no higher standard of certification.
Mobius Institute Board of Certification (MIBoC) is an impartial and independent entity that is directed by scheme and technical committees to ensure that its certification meets or exceeds the requirements defined by the applicable International Organization for Standardization, ISO 18436 standards.
Certification is valid for 5 years.
Re-certification requires an application fee and updating your work experience.
Exam:
The exam is available on-line after course completion at a location of choice, supervised by an approved independent invigilator. There is no time limit on when the exam can be taken.
